Abstract

The book written by Prof. PS Jayaramu, retired Professor of Political Science and former Dean Bangalore University titled: ‘Decoding Indian Politics’, is a very timely and unique addition to the plethora of books on Indian politics. It is unique in the sense that it provides an in-depth and holistic analysis of issues and events – international, national and state. The book is based on the years of painstaking research and reflection.

Prof. Jayaramu is a well-known expert on national and international affairs. The book puts together almost seventy articles penned by him in the prestigious Mainstream Weekly. His columns are seriously followed by students, teachers and researchers, which enables them to have a better grasp over complex events, issues and challenges. The author has the unique ability to simplify/unravel these complex issues and make them understandable with a high degree of clarity. He conveys complex issues in a simple and lucid way, yet backing them up with meticulous research and academic rigor.

A glance through the book shows the ability of Prof. Jayaramu to reflect on themes that have a bearing on the Indian state and politics. One has to admire the breadth and depth of issues covered. His articles focus on issues pertaining to Indian foreign policy, Indian government, polity, society and economy. He has written in great detail on the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, developments in Afghanistan, India-US, India -China relations and India’s role in the UN. On national Issues the focus has largely been on coalition politics, elections and Indian politics, Indian parliamentary procedures and practices, budget making in India, economic reforms, party politics focusing on the BJP, INC and regional parties. On state issues, Prof. Jayaramu has particularly focused on Karnataka government and politics. The most distinguishing feature of his book is that, he revisits the enduring debates in Indian politics and also provides a list of very pragmatic policy prescriptions. Hence, his writings are intensely followed by the academic community, the media and policy making community.

Prof. Jayaramu’s book is not only timely but also a useful addition to the body of literature on Indian government and politics. His books decodes/explores the historical antecedents, key ideas, issues, contestations, debates with deep insights and analysis. ‘Decoding Indian Politics’ is a very useful for students, teachers, researchers and the policy makers. It is handy, authoritative, a must read and fulfills a long-felt need.
